for beginners, families and experts

Learn, discover and admire

At the mouth of the beautiful Romaine River, where the river meets the sea, you’ll discover the otherworldly landscape of Romaine Bay, which was shaped by glaciers thousands of years ago.

The bay is sea kayaker’s paradise. The Romaine Bay is the perfect place to try sea kayaking for the first time, even with a young family. It’s shallow depth and narrow mouth means it has small waves and warmer water then the surrounding Gulf of St. Lawrence. And, with two rivers bringing freshwater from the Boreal Forest into the bay, it’s home to a rich ecosystem.

This rare geography is also great if you’re an experienced kayaker looking for a different area to paddle in, or if you just want to take some stunning photos. For intermediate paddlers interesting in pushing their limits, the mouth of the bay has some large standing waves for you to play in relatively safely.

The daylong outing is the perfect length to get away from civilization and experience the bay. You’ll get a sense of the ancient rhythm of the bay and even enjoy a delicious meal cooked on site by your guide.

This six hours adventure gives you enough time to explore the whole bay and its diverse flora and fauna. If the weather is nice, we can even paddle out of the bay and, with some luck, kayak with whales and watch them feed along the cliffs, truly a once in a lifetime experience for most people.

During your adventure you’ll be overwhelmed by the beauty of the bay, see and even swim in the Roman River Falls, watch as Arctic terns dance in the sky above, and simply relax as you settle into the rhythm of this unique, majestic environment.

On clear days and even in foggy weather, this unique site will give you a thousand surprises. We base our route on the wind direction, the level of water in the Bay, and the ability of the group.

 What is provided:

  • Single or double kayak, paddle, skirt;
  • Clothes, wetsuit, windbreaker and neoprene booties (wetsuit is not mandatory inside the bay on hot days in July and August);
  • Basic training so you can move efficiently and comfortably on your own during the trip;
  • Waterproof Bags: Can be used for snack, camera and change of clothes;
  • Lunch and snacks. Lunch consists of a smoked salmon pita or grilled sandwich (your choice), seasonal salad and miso broth. Seasonal fruits are served for dessert. Please let us know about any allergies when making your food choices.

Do not forget to bring:

  • Spare clothes;
  • Your complete waterproof kit or waterproof-breathable clothing (anorak) pants and coat (the weather can change quickly);
  • Water shoes or sandals (however, you can use Noryak's booties);
  • Hot sweater or fleece, any clothing made of synthetic material, avoid cotton;
  • Sunglasses and straps so you don’t lose them;
  • Hat;
  • Sunscreen;
  • Bottle of water (1 litre minimum) and light snack;
  • Personal medication as needed;
  • A camera
  • Eat a good breakfast

General information:

  • We require a minimum of 6 registered guests to depart;
  • Expect to paddle about 10 kilometres depending on weather conditions, tidal currents and group goals and fitness levels;
  • From mid-July to mid-August, the temperature of the water at the mouth of the Romaine River is warm enough for swimming;
  • Minimum participant age is 10-years-old (each youth must be accompanied by an adult);
  • Guests must sign a release form and medical form before departure;
  • The departure and the return are from our base of the Romaine River, follow the gravel road located at kilometre 1201 of the Highway 138 between the Lechasseur river and the Maleck river. (Same site as the Youth Hostel of Minganie);
  • You must reserve in advance;
  • Please arrive at least 20 minutes in advance

Children and Adolescents 10 to 17 years: $95.00

Special family rate for four (2 adults, 2 children) $395 and a guaranteed departure 

* You can get a 15 per cent discount if you own your own boat (15 foot minimum), your own kayak gear (PFD/ wet-suit), and your own safety gear. We reserve the right to refuse this privilege if we deem any of your equipment to be inadequate for this adventure.
